The role of Francophone and values of the French language were underscored at the 14 th Francophone Summit that took place in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, on October 13 and 14.

The event brought together representatives from 56 official member countries, 19 associate states and observers as well as honourary guests from international organisations such as the United Nations and the African Union.

The two-day summit offered an opportunity for member countries to highlight the role of the Francophone community as well as values of the French language in global activities. It also gathered supports for Africa ’s role in the French-speaking community and global governance.

Opening the ceremony, French President Francois Hollande affirmed supports for the Congo people and expressed his belief in the future of Africa.

He also pointed out that in its future developmental course, the Francophone community is still challenged by how to solve conflicts, reduce poverty, ensure food security, minimise the impacts of the global economic-financial crisis, manage natural resources and protect the environment.-VNA
