Thailand’s army chief Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha has officially become prime minister following an endorsement by the King on August 25.

Gen. Prayuth received the written royal command appointing him as the 29th Prime Minister of Thailand at a ceremony at the Royal Thai Army’s headquarters on August 25 morning, according to the National News Bureau of Thailand (NNT).

The endorsement came four days after he was elected by the country’s National Legislative Assembly (NLA) to lead the provisional government with 191/197 votes.

The interim government will be established in the coming weeks, NNT said.

The general is due to retire as Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army in September, but will remain head of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).-VNA
