Tourism industry, which contributes about 10 percent to the Thai economy, has not yet recovered due to the impact of prolonged political tension.

According to the country's tourism department, although the number of tourist arrivals to Thailand totalled 1.91 million in July, up 22.7 percent over the previous month, it still fell 10.9 percent from a year earlier.

For the first seven months of the year, visitors to the country numbered 13.62 million, down 10.7 percent from 15.26 million a year earlier, an even deeper drop than the first-half decline of 9.9 percent.

Of the total, tourists from East Asia were down 17.6 percent while those from Europe increased 3.1 percent and from Africa , up 9.6 percent.

Declines were seen in the numbers of visitors from America (3.5 percent), the Middle East (6.9 percent), South Asia (10 percent) and Oceania (1.6 percent).

Arrivals from ASEAN, which make up 26.8 percent of all foreign tourists to Thailand , were down 9.8 percent.-VNA
