Thailand’s water situation is becoming critical this year, warned the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) on October 28.

TDRI experts said there will not be enough water for irrigation in the second crop and water reserves are estimated at only four million cubic metres for 2016.

Reservoirs in the country have hit their lowest water levels in the past five decades and the levels are forecast to drop even further during the dry season, which begins in November.

The government drew up a strategy on river flow management to ensure water supply for agricultural lands in the northeast region and the Chao Praya River basin. However, the plan was criticised by neighbouring countries for resulting in water shortages downstream.-VNA
