Thai Commerce Minister General Chatchai Sarikalya has instructed the Department of Internal Trade to use 55 central markets in various provinces as an engine to boost competitions in rice trade and sales of paddy rice.

The instruction came after his visit to rice farmers in Nakhon Sawan province together with Permanent Secretary for Commerce Chutima Boonyaprapatsorn.

General Chatchai said his visit was aimed at reviving the concept of central market, which is a center to facilitate rice farmers in selling their crops to interested parties.

General Chatchai therefore assigned the Department of Internal Trade to revive the roles of 55 central markets in various parts of the country as a mechanism to boost prices of farm crops through sale competitions and auctions. The effort sets to start this month.

The minister also asked officials concerned to hold public relations meetings with rice farmers and traders to make them realize the numerous benefits of the central market.-VNA/NNT
