Thailand ’s Government set August 7 as the date for a referendum on its controversial new constitution.

The cabinet has approved the referendum bill proposed by the Election Committee, its spokesman Sansern Kaewkumnerd told reporters on March 15.
The referendum will be the country's first vote since the military government seized power in May 2014.
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha said this version of constitution will help him deliver on his vow to rid the country out of corruption and bring stability once and for all.
He has promised to hold the general election in mid-2017, though he has not specified what will happen if the constitution is rejected.
Once being approved, the new constitution will become the 20th in Thailand over the past 84 years.-VNA
