Thailand is trying to promote its border trade with Laos after Thai exports to that country rose to 109 billion THB last year.

According to the Thai Ministry of Industry, cross-border trade between Thailand and its northeastern neighbour has been rising since the three friendship bridges across the Mekong River came into use. Thai people are connected to Laos through Nong Khai, Mukdahan and Nakhon Phanom provinces.

Thai exports to Laos increased 34.4 percent from 2011 to 109 billion THB last year. Border trade is seen very active in Mukdahan province with more than 28 billion THB worth of Thai commodities sent to Laos, accounting for 26 percent of Thailand ’s total exports.

The ministry has eyed all the provinces bordering Laos including Chiang Rai, Loei, Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Ubon Ratchathani and Beung Kan will become a significant cluster to the industrial and export sectors, particularly when the ASEAN Economic Community is formed by 2015.-VNA
