Hanoi’s Thang Long Water Puppetry Theatre has been recognised by the Asian Book of Records for performing live shows every day of the year.

A ceremony was held on October 17 in the theatre to mark the accolade.

In 2006, it was acknowledged as Vietnam’s only artistic venue to offer such an unbroken string of performances.

Established in 1969, the theatre fell into disuse before water puppet shows were restored in 1990. Monthly, then weekly and finally daily performances were organised for domestic and foreign audiences.

Since almost all guided tours around Hanoi include a show at the theatre, it stays open all year round and has introduced the traditional art form to people from more than 50 countries across the world.

Artist Chu Luong said the theatre’s shows embrace traditional national values, and this authenticity is behind the national and international acclaim.

Over the past two decades, on average there have been five shows held on each of the year’s 365 days.

The theatre is currently preparing to participate in the fourth International Water Puppet Festival next year.-VNA
