Thai Nguyen (VNA) - Three babies conceived via in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) in the northern province of Thai Nguyen were born on December 4, Hospital A’s director Do Minh Thinh said.

The surgery took about one hour and was performed by Deputy Minister of Health Dr Nguyen Viet Tien and Thinh, with assistance from the nursing staff.

The first baby was born to Chu Thi Huyen, a resident of Dai Tu district’s Khoi Ky commune, while Tran Thi Dien from Ky Phu Commune had twins.

This was the first time that a hospital in the province successfully conducted IVF procedures and delivered babies. The IVF procedures were done in March, Thinh said.

It was a milestone for the hospital staff and would give hopes to thousands of married couples in the region who had been unable to conceive naturally, according to the hospital director.

The hospital’s reproductive support unit was set up last June and was the first for a dozen of northern mountainous provinces that offers assisted reproduction, Thinh said.-VNA
