Hanoi (VNA) – Export earnings from timber and wooden furniture reached 7.3 billion USD in 2016, a year-on-year rise of 1 percent, reported the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Nguyen Ba Ngai, Deputy Head of the Vietnam Administration of Forestry, said the export value of wooden furniture and other forestry products increased by between 5-10 percent.

Wood chip remained a key staple in 2016, with China being the biggest importer of the product from Vietnam.

Vietnam’s wood chip is currently facing fiercer competition from the similar product of Thailand, Australia and African countries.

To improve the quality and ensure the supply of materials, Vietnam has increased forest areas.

According to the Vietnam Administration of Forestry, the country’s total area of timber forests now exceeds 127,700 hectares.-VNA
