Traffic deaths in the first seventh months of 2013 rose by 4.86 percent year-on-year, according to statistics released by the National Committee for Traffic Safety.

During the period there were more than 6,400 traffic accidents, killing 5,635 people and seriously injuring another 3,900.

The committee said that in contrast to the rise in fatalities, the number of accidents declined by 6.82 percent.

The Railway and Road Police Department recorded 624 traffic accidents in the firth half of August, resulting in 244 deaths and 364 injuries.

Of the total, road accidents claimed the most lives (242 deaths and 356 injuries), followed by rail accidents (two deaths and eight injuries).-VNA
