A tropical depression is forecast to bring strong winds and heavy rains to Hanoi and other northern localities on September 8 night and September 9, according to the National Hydro Meteorological Forecast Centre.

The northern mountainous areas are warned to be braced for possible landslide and flash floods.

The depression, which is about 290km north of the Hoang Sa Archipelago, is said to move west-northwest and northwest at a speed of between 10-15 kph in the next 24 hours.

By 1.00 pm of September 8, it will be about 180km to the southeast of northern coastal Quang Ninh province.

The tropical low is forecast to hit the northern border localities some time during the next 24-48 hours, and then weaken to a low pressure area.

Because of the depression’s effects, rough seas, strong winds and rainstorms will occur in the northern offshore waters of Hoang Sa Archipelago and the Gulf of Tonkin in the afternoon and evening of September 7.-VNA
