A ceremony was held in the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa on May 10 to pay tribute to heroes and martyrs who sacrificed their lives when defending the country’s sovereignty over Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago.

The event was organised at Co Lin – Len Dao area of the archipelago as part of a working trip of officials of central agencies and Ho Chi Minh City. Participants offered incense and released flowers to commemorate fallen soldiers.

Speaking at the event, Rear Admiral Dinh Gia That, Political Commissar of the Vietnam People’s Navy, recalled the incident 25 years ago on March 14, 1988 , when foreign naval warships invaded the Vietnamese waters and launched attack on the area in Truong Sa. In defending the country’s sovereignty, 64 naval officials and soldiers fought to their last breath and laid down their lives in the waters.

The rear admiral affirmed that despite hardships and difficulties, Truong Sa soldiers are resolved to firmly defend the nation’s sacred sovereignty over the sea and islands.-VNA
