The Ministry of Health on October 2 confirmed two more deaths from the A/H1N1 flu, raising the total due to the disease to 18.

The first victim was a 25-year-old woman who lived in Ca Mau--the country’s southernmost point—who was 24-weeks pregnant. She was hospitalised on September 22 and died on September 27.

The second woman, 47, also from Ca Mau, showed symptoms of the disease on September 24. She was sent to hospital on September 27 but died three days later.

Both cases have tested positive for the A/H1N1 virus.

The ministry also reported 201 more cases of the flu on the day, bringing the total number of patients to 9,461 in 59 out of 64 cities and provinces nationwide.

So far, 8,331 patients have been successfully treated and released from hospital. The remaining cases have been quarantined in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. All are reported to be in stable condition.

The ministry urged people and authorities in areas that have received evacuees from the floods in central and Central Highlands regions to ensure environmental sanitation to prevent the spread of diseases.

It also urged all people, especially pregnant women, to immediately go to health clinics for check-ups and treatment if they begin to show flu-like symptoms./.
