Carlos Maria Irigaray Santana on April 29 presented his letter of credence as Uruguay Ambassador to ASEAN Secretary-General Le Luong Minh.

The ASEAN Chief congratulated the diplomat for assuming his new role and looked forward to closer cooperation with Uruguay in areas of mutual interest, including trade and investment.

He informed the ambassador of the key progress made in ASEAN Community building and called upon Uruguay to extend its support to ASEAN in this important endeavour.

Highlighting ASEAN's outward-looking approach in external relations, Minh encouraged Uruguay and ASEAN to work closely in promoting region-to-region cooperation, including between ASEAN and the Community of Latin America and Caribbean States (CELAC) and through the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC) for peace, stability and prosperity in the two regions.

Ambassador Santana expressed his wish to work closely with ASEAN to further explore opportunities for cooperation and collaboration between the bloc and Uruguay .

Santana is the first Ambassador of Uruguay to ASEAN since the ASEAN Charter took into effect in December 2008.

He is concurrently accredited as Ambassador of Uruguay to Vietnam, Singapore and Indonesia.-VNA
