The Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee on Oct. 14 launched the Action Month for the Poor.

The month will begin from Oct. 17 to mark the day Uncle Ho proclaimed an appeal for help to the poor (October 17th, 1946).

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Huynh Dam, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee called on ministries, departments, organisations, individuals, businesses at home and abroad and Overseas Vietnamese to contribute to the “Fund for the Poor” and support social welfare programmes, to help the poor and those living in disadvantaged areas to escape poverty.

Addressing the launch ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai expressed thanks to the Fatherland Front for joining the Party and State in the process of poverty reduction, which contributed to helping the country to fulfill the UN millennium development goals.

He also thanked organisations, individuals, benefactors, Overseas Vietnamese and international friends for their good deeds and support for the campaign in past years.

Since 2000, the National Fund for the Poor has collected nearly 5.7 trillion VND (nearly 271 million USD). More than 1 million houses were built for poor households across the country, along with thousands of projects and social welfare programmes, totalling 9 trillion VND (428 million USD).

At the ceremony, 14 businesses pledged to contribute 1.7 trillion VND 81 million USD to the fund./.
