Vietnam to classify universities by training quality

Vietnamese universities will be classified into three groups based on the training they offer under a decree issued by the government, which will assess them on research, application and practice.

Each group will be ranked into three levels depending on their training quality, the best ranked as Class 1, the worst Class 3 and the rest Class 2.

Rankings would be reviewed every two years. The regulation takes effect from October 25.

The criteria for ranking universities include scale of the schools, courses they offer and types of degree they offer. Training activities, technologies applied, quality of training and education quality assessment are also important factors that will be considered in the ranking process.

Nguyen Van Nha, Head of the Training Department of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, said that universities needed to be classified to provide people with more information about the quality of their training.

"It will also make state investment in universities more effective, and students will be able to choose a suitable school for themselves," he said.-VNA
