Two gold medals on August 21 marked the Vietnamese team’s best performance day at the 2013 Asian Youth Games which is underway in Nanjing, China.

Swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien won gold in the girls’ 200m backstroke, clocking 2’12’’65, exceeding Republic of Korea ’s Im Dasol with 2’15’’09.

This is Vien’s second medal at the Games. She pocketed a silver medal on August 20 in the 100m backstroke event.

In girls’ high jump, Nguyen Thi Truc Mai brought a surprise when she crossed 5m90, surpassing another Chinese jumper to bring home the second gold for Vietnam ’s team.

Besides, Tran Thi Mai won a silver in the girls’ 3,000m steeplechase and Nguyen Thi Lan got another silver in the girls’ 100m hurdles. Truong Thi Kim Tuyen won bronze in the girls’ taekwondo under 47kg.

In tennis, Ly Hoang Nam advanced to the men’s singles semi-final, where he will meet unseeded rival Popko Dimitri of Kazakhstan .

With the August 21 result, Vietnam is currently at the 10 th place on the medal tally with two golds, four silvers and one bronze.-VNA
