Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnam’s female team rose seven steps from 16th to ninth place out of 140 teams at the Chess Olympiad on September 13 in Baku, Azerbaizan.

The team defeated Estonia 3-1 to secure 14 points after 10 matches.

Pham Le Thao Nguyen beat Narva Mai. Hoang Thi Bao Tram tied with Tsiganova Monika. Nguyen Thi Mai Hung beat Olde Margareth and Nguyen Thi Thanh An drew with Narva Triin.

Vietnam will face the Netherlands next.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese male team dropped from 13th position to 28th out of 150 teams after losing to Slovenia 1-3.

Grandmaster (GM) Le Quang Liem tied with GM Alexander G. Beliavsky. GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son also drew with Luka Lenic. While Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy and Nguyen Anh Khoi were defeated by Jure Borisek and Matej Sebenik, respectively.

Vietnam will meet China, who tied 2-2 with Belarus to rank 20th, in the next round.-VNA
