Overseas Vietnamese in Australia have raised more than 12,000 AUD to support a programme to build a school in Truong Sa Lon island.
The fund-raising campaigns have been organised in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney with the participation of former Vice President Truong Thi My Hoa, who is President of the Vu A Dinh Scholarship Fund.
According to Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Hoang Vinh Thanh, with these contributions, the OVs join hands in protecting and affirming Vietnam ’s sovereignty over its sea and islands.
Launched by the Vu A Dinh Scholarship Fund and the Ho Chi Minh City Law newspaper last month, the “For beloved Truong Sa students” programme aims to mobilise about 10 billion VND from donors to build a 300 sq. m six-classroom school for students in Truong Sa Lon island.
Work on the school is expected to start next month and be completed in March 2013.
On September 22, more than 1,000 Vietnamese students in Australia took part in a music gala in Sydney to highlight their sentiments towards the home land and raise fund for the “For beloved Truong Sa students” programme.
Around 26,000 Vietnamese students are studying in Australia , mostly in New South Wales and Victoria.-VNA
