Quang Nam (VNA) – Prosecutors from Vietnamese and Lao border provinces discussed measures to increase the efficiency of the fight against drug crime at a conference in the central province of Quang Nam on July 18.

The event is the fifth meeting of the people’s procuracy agencies of provinces along the Vietnam-Laos border.

Speaking at the conference, Vietnamese Prosecutor General Le Minh Tri reviewed the cooperation in fighting drug crime between the Supreme People’s Procuracies of Vietnam and Laos following the fourth meeting of border provinces held in Luang Prabang in October 2015.

The two sides have intensified information sharing and cooperation in investigation, so that a lot of major rings operating in the border areas have been detected and razed.

Within the framework of the ASEAN Community, the two procuracies have actively participated in building the community, and intensified communication activities to enhance prosecutors’ awareness about the role of the community, Tri added.

Lao Prosecutor General Khamsan Suvong stated that in the context of international integration, trans-national organised crime, especially drug crime, is threatening social security, order and safety, and impacting the economy’s stability.

He stressed the need for the two countries to foster cooperation at the local, national, regional and global levels.

At the meeting, participants suggested the two countries push forward with cooperation in prosecutor training, teach the Vietnamese and Lao languages to prosecutors in border provinces, and encourage procuracies in provinces and districts along the border line to increase the exchange of delegation exchanges for information and experience sharing.

The Supreme People’s Procuracies were urged to complete procedures for the early signing of a new mutual judicial assistance agreement on criminal affairs.

Both sides agreed to organise the sixth meetng in Laos in 2019.-VNA
