Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnamese students pocketed four gold medals on the third day of competition at the ongoing ASEAN School Games (ASG) in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The winners competed in gymnastics, athletics and table tennis events.

Vietnam’s Nguyen Phuoc Hai and Nguyen Van Dat won the boy’s horizontal bar event. Their performance brought them both 12.65 points from the jury who decided to award gold medal to both. The bronze went to Somphop Suandokmai of Thailand on 12.50 points.

Vietnam’s gymnasts also took medals, with Trinh Hai Khang coming second in the boy’s vault while Do Thi Ngoc Huong took silver in the girl’s floor exercise. Earlier, Truong Khanh Van grabbed two bronzes in the girl’s floor exercise and balance beam. Hai bagged his third medal of the day, a bronze, in the boy’s parallel bar.

July 25 was the last day of gymnastics with Vietnamese athletes winning four gold, five silver and five bronze medals. They placed third in gymnastics, behind Thailand and Singapore.

In athletics, Pham Thi Thuy Hanh triumphed in the girl’s 800m event, winning in 2min 13.94sec. Thai runner Apinya Athiwet finished second, followed by Vietnamese Hoang Thi Trang.

Tran Thi Loan added a second gold for the track-and-field team in the girl’s long jump with a jump of 5.51m.

Tia Louise Rozario of Singapore took silver with a jump of 5.41m and Malaysian Ng Yu Jie placed third on 4.85m.

The runners also grabbed two silvers in the boy’s 5,000m by Le Trung Duc and boy’s 800m by Nguyen Duc Hung.

Vietnam’s fourth gold on July 25 came in the boy’s doubles table tennis event. Nguyen Van Huan and Nguyen Anh Duc defeated Thai duo Varote Shotelersuk and Sama Boonyawadee 11-7, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9 in the final match.

In the girl’s doubles, Vu Thi Thu Ha and Pham Da Thao lost 6-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-13 to Linda Zeng Ziyue and Koh Jing Wen Monica of Singpore to take silver.

July 25 was also the last day of swimming which saw a silver and a bronze going to Vietnamese athletes.

Vu Thi Phuong Anh came second in the girl’s 200m breaststroke and Tran Ngoc Thi was third in the girl’s 50m butterfly.

The Vietnamese team has so far pocketed 10 gold medals to rank third in the medal table. Thailand place first with 27 golds, followed by Indonesia with 15.

Vietnam brought 64 athletes to the eighth ASG, competing in track-and-field, gymnastics, swimming and table tennis.

ASG is a festival of sports programmes and activities for school children from the ASEAN countries. The first Games under the new format was held by Thailand in 2009.

It is an annual event with member countries taking turns to host.

At the last edition in Brunei, Indonesia topped the rankings, followed by Malaysia and Thailand.-VNA
