Vietnam-Japan water management cooperation promoted

supported environmental protection and strengthened water environment
management in some Vietnamese localities.
A Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) financed project has
supported environmental protection and strengthened water environment
management in some Vietnamese localities.
These are the results of a project called “Strengthening capacity of management of water environmental” announced during a workshop held by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) in Hanoi on May 20.
The project was launched in January 2010 and has accomplished all of its initial goals.
Under the project, five participating localities, namely Hanoi, HCM City, Hai Phong city, and Thua Thien–Hue and Ba Ria–Vung Tau provinces were assisted in improving their water environment management capacity, focusing on policy making, water analysis, inspection capacity, and database establishment.
According to Tomisaka, a JICA expert, in addition to promoting management capacity for MONRE and the five localities’ Departments of Natural Resources and Environment, Japanese experts provided much environmental-related experience and knowledge for Vietnamese partners through various training courses and joint activities between the two sides’ officials.
The outcomes of the project have created favourable conditions for Vietnam and Japan ’s future cooperation in the field.
Addressing the event, MONRE Deputy Minister Bui Cach Tuyen stressed Vietnam always appreciates efficient cooperative relations with Japan ’s Government in various essential fields.
MONRE has signed eight projects using Japan’s financial aid in the fields of water and air environment, biodiversity and green house emissions between 2005 and 2013, noted Tuyen.
In particular, the Vietnam Environmental Administration is executing three technical assistance projects on water and air environment management, and biodiversity with Japan’s fund of 13 million USD.
Besides, several divisions under MONRE are working closely with many Japanese partners in information and experience exchanges, personnel training and conferences.
Through JICA, the Japanese Government has also supported the country in research programmes concerning environmental issues.-VNA
