Swimmers shone as the Vietnam team did well on the third day of the ASEAN Para Games at Kuala Lumpur ’s Putra Bukit Jalil Stadium on Aug. 17.

In men’s freestyle finals, Vo Thanh Tung won the group A 100m S5 in 1:28.26 over Malaysia’s Siga Jamery and Thai Voravit Kaewkham.

In the same group’s S9 finals, Vo Huynh Anh Khoa was more than 11 sec clear of Filipino Arnel Aba when he took the 400m in 5:10.82. Khoa had another easy win in the 100m.

Vietnam’s other final winners were Nguyen Hoang Nha (men’s 50m backstroke S9) and Pham Cua (women’s 50m backstroke S6).

Several other team members were placed in finals. Second among the men were Nguyen Duc Thien (100m freestyle S7, group A) and Nguyen Duy Long (50m backstroke S10). Dang Van Cong was third in 1:17.80 in the 100m freestyle S8.

Cao Ngoc Hung won the discus F58 with a throw of 44.86m over Thai Sakchai Yimbanchang, who recorded 38.9m.

Phuong Hoang won the shot F55 from Brunei ’s Hirdan Haji Abdul Kadir while Cong Manh and Khac Tran were third in the 1500m T46 and 200m T42 finals respectively.

In badminton, table tennis and power lifting, Vietnam’s team, shone in the qualifying rounds, suggesting it wll improve its rally of 38 gold, 25 silver and 17 bronze medals. Thailand and Malaysia top the medal table.

The biannual games, which have attracted about 1,200 athletes, are considered the biggest multi-sports and multi-disability event for the disabled in the ASEAN region./.
