The Vietnam National Institute of Ophthalmology (VNIO) has provided free eye checks-up and medicine to 150 patients, mostly women, in response to the World Sight Day (WSD) 2009’s theme of gender equality in eye care.

The activity was part of a programme held by the Vietnam Ophthalmology Association in association with the VNIO and the Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRC) under the sponsorship of ORBIS organisation.

The VRC’s voluntary doctor team will also provide free eye treatment to 150 old people in the city on this occasion.

Additionally, 100 poor cataract patients in northern Bac Ninh province will receive free surgery on Sept. 28.

WSD is held annually on the second Thursday of October to draw the community’s attention to the global eye issue. The WSD 2009 has the theme “Gender and eye health - equal access to care” as nearly two-thirds of blind people worldwide are women and girls but they have poor access to eye care compared to men./.
