Twenty-three players have been called up for the national team to compete at the upcoming Southeast Asian Women's Football Championships in Laos.

Seven of those players represent national champions Hanoi Trang An 1, and eight play for runners-up Phong Phu Ha Nam .

The squad features a number of new faces, including Tuyet Dung who was voted the best player in the National Women's Under-19 Football Championship. The Ha Nam Province-born player is believed have great potential, although she still needs more time to develop her skills.

With a view to rejuvenating the team, head coach Chan Yun Fat has decided to call up only four veterans – Kieu Trinh, Kim Tien, Le Thi Thuong and Nguyen Thi Muon – who have played in several Southeast Asian Games.

Fat said he would put his trust in youngsters Hai Hoa and Bui Thi Nhu who have proved their ability in recent tournaments. As a result, midfield trio Ngoc Anh, Nhieu Thuy Linh and Nguyen Thi Nga, a previously indispensible part of the team, have been left out.

Players will start training on Sept. 5 in Hanoi before moving to Vinh Phuc Province 's Tam Dao Town for more physical exercise.

A 10-day course is being lined up for the squad in China early next month, from which they will fly to Laos for the championship from October 16-25 in Vientiane .

Vietnam has been drawn in group A with Indonesia , Singapore and hosts Laos . Group B consists of Myanmar , Thailand , Malaysia and the Philippines .

Vietnam is likely to face Myanmar or Thailand if they make it to the semi-finals. This year, Vietnam have beaten Thailand twice and defeated Myanmar once in friendly tournaments.

Based on those statistics, Fat from China is quietly confident of his team's chances./.
