Construction works on the road linking Vo Van Kiet street in Ho Chi Minh City's Binh Chanh district with the HCM City – Trung Luong Expressway began on October 26 after the investor of the project broke ground for the first phase of this 1.557 trillion VND (nearly 70 million USD) project.

Yen Khanh Production, Trading and Service Co., the investor of the project, will build the 2.7km road under the BOT (Build – Operate – Transfer) investment form.

According to Pham Van Diet, General Director of Yen Khanh Production, Trading and Service Co., the road will be 60 metres wide. In the first phase, four lanes will be constructed on a section 29 metres wide on the two sides of the road. The remaining 31 metre section (in the middle of the road) will be built in the second phase.

Work on the first phase will include two flyovers and two bridges spanning Hung Nhon and Cai Trung canals in Binh Chanh district.

Construction is scheduled to complete in 20 months, said Diet.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said that though the project is not so big, it is of significant importance because the road will help connect the southeastern with the southwestern provinces of the country.

He said the new road will help ease traffic congestions on the section of the National Highway No 1A running through Binh Chanh district and facilitate transportation on the western gateway of HCM City.

Hai added that investments will be boosted for transportation infrastructure development to pave the way for socio-economic development of HCM City and Hanoi. These two cities will have a population of over 10 million people each in the coming years.

The Deputy Chairman of the HCM City People's Committee, Nguyen Huu Tin, told the Departments of Transport and Planning and Investment of HCM City to create favourable conditions for the investor to complete construction on schedule.

Tin also asked the HCM City Department of Zoning and Architecture to map out urban architectural zoning plan for the road.

The ground breaking ceremony was also attended by Politburo member Le Hoang Anh and Minister for Transport Dinh La Thang.-VNA
