Eleven pirates who had hijacked the Malaysian ship Zafirah were handed over to southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau Coast Guard late on November 22.

The preliminary investigation shows that the 11 arrested are not of Vietnamese nationality. They were seized by Zone 3 Maritime Police when attempting to escape by jumping into the sea.

On the morning of November 23, the ship was towed to Bai Truoc beach of Vung Tau city for further investigation, according to Ba Ria-Vung Tay Coast Guard.

The ship had been heading to Pasirgudang port of Malaysia from Miri, when on November 18 it was attacked by pirates. Two days later the hijackers released nine sailors in a lifeboat. Adrift at sea, they were spotted and rescued by two Vietnamese fishing vessels.

Zone 3 Maritime Search and Rescue Centre received a distress call from the vessels and immediately sent boats to bring the nine foreign sailors to shore./. VNA
