National and international observers will monitor Cambodia’s general election on July 28, said the National Election Committee (NEC) at a press briefing on July 4.

They include 15,885 national observers from domestic associations and non-governmental organisations, and 30 international monitors from six international institutions and foreign embassies.

These numbers may change as the deadlines for the registration of national and international observers are July 18 and 25 respectively.

NEC said that 9.6 million people have registered to vote in the election for the 123-seat parliament, more than half of them are between the ages of 18 and 35.

Of the eight political parties in the election, there are the ruling Cambodian People's Party of Prime Minister Hun Sen, the opposing Cambodia National Rescue Party led by self-exiled leader Sam Rainsy, and the royalist FUNCINPEC Party headed by Princess Norodom Arun Rasmey - the youngest daughter of late King Father Norodom Sihanouk.-VNA
