The 21st national mathematical Olympiad concluded in central Da Nang city on April 13, with the attendance of nearly 800 candidates from 88 universities and colleges nationwide.

Twenty-nine students were awarded first prizes in the calculus category, while 28 others won first prizes in algebra.

Special prizes went to Nguyen Duc Nam from the Hanoi Pedagogical University No.1, Vo Van Huy from the HCM City University Technology, Nguyen Chi Trung from the HCM City University of Pedagogy, and Le Quang Lam from the Hanoi University of Civil Engineering.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Tran Quang Quy affirmed that maths has a crucial role in college and university curricula.

Mathematical development is also key to solving socio-economic issues, he added.

The 2012 Olympiad was hosted by Duy Tan University in Da Nang city. The Pham Van Dong University in central Quang Ngai province will be the host of next year’s contest.-VNA
