The 34 th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) closed on September 22 in Bandar Seri Begawan , Brunei , with a Joint Communiqué stressing the determination towards a regional community in the next two years.

Delegates at the second plenary session agreed with resolutions put forward by AIPA committees and approved a number of important points that will support AIPA in its role realising the ASEAN Community.

The Joint Communiqué said that AIPA will continue supporting, promoting and sharing measures to achieve the goals of ASEAN Vision and the ASEAN Community, which will be formed by 2015.

During the assembly, observer status was also granted to the parliament of Timor Leste.

Addressing the closing ceremony, Chairman of the 34 th AIPA General Assembly – who is Chairman of the Brunei Legislative Council - Isa Bin Ibrahim, said the Joint Communiqué will act as a reference for ASEAN’s future initiatives.

He added that AIPA and ASEAN should continue increasing high-level consultations and strengthening the cooperation between their respective Secretariats to agree upon action plans, thus supporting regional partnership programmes and effectively building the ASEAN Community by 2015.
Laos was nominated as the Chair of AIPA and host of the 35 th AIPA General Assembly in 2014. The next meeting will be held in the capital city of Vientiane on September 14-20, 2014 .

Themed “The role of AIPA in realising the ASEAN Community”, this year’s event drew delegates from member countries Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, and observer countries Japan, Belarus, Canada, China, Russia and the European Parliament.-VNA
