The government has agreed to a thermo-electricity plant with an annual capacity 200 MW in the island district of Phu Quoc, according to the People’s Committee of the southern province of Kien Giang.

Covering an area of 60.3 hectares in Ganh Dau commune, the plant will be built at a cost of 356.8 million USD invested by the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group.

The first phase of the project is scheduled to be operational in 2015.

The plant, in addition to addressing the area’s daily shortfall in power supply, will incorporate the use of materials and technology to reduce harmful emissions that might affect the quality of ecological tourism in Phu Quoc district.

A project to install a underwater electricity transmission line to the island is also under way./.
