The 42nd meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers (AMM) got underway on Phuket island, Thailand, on July 17 amid tightened security.

Currently, the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) and the Meeting of Directors-General (DG) are focusing on finalising all draft documents for submission to ASEAN foreign ministers for approval on July 20-21.

After the 42nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM), Thailand will host the Post Ministerial Conferences (PMC) and the 16th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) which also begin on July 17 and run through July 23, according to the Thailand News Agency (TNA).

These are the first international high-level conferences to take place in the country since the ASEAN Summit was interrupted by demonstrations staged by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) last April.

About 10,000 soldiers and policemen have been deployed to maintain security in the island city which is under the enforcement of the Internal Security Act.

The ASEAN brings together ten countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam./.
