Hanoi (VNA) – The 44th Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) Executive Board Meeting, hosted by the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) on April 19, was a success as regional news agencies together sought to beat fake news to regain public trust in mainstream news.

VNA Deputy Director General Vu Viet Trang, who is deputy head of the organising board of the 44th OANA Executive Board Meeting, stated that almost all reports of news agencies and speeches by invited speakers focused on the issue of fake news, a decline in public trust in the media, and the application of technology in news production.

In addition to negative impact caused by fake news on society, delegates also shared experience in dealing with the issue and intensifying fact-checking so as to provide accurate news for the public, thus helping news agencies regain their trust in mainstream news.

Through speeches delivered at the meeting, VNA is more confident in its development orientations which are to provide news in a timely, accurate and objective manner and at the same time step up technology application to make it operate more professionally.

To fulfil their role of providing source information for the media, VNA and other OANA member agencies have pursued the accuracy of news they produced after verifying needed information from authorised sources.

Fact-checking requires time, but it is necessary for a professional journalism, Trang emphasised, adding that providing accurate and comprehensive information for the public is a responsibility of news agencies for ensuring the public’s right to access information adequately.

According to the VNA Deputy Director General, international colleagues to the 44th OANA Executive Board Meeting witnessed a new development step of Vietnam’s national news agency, which is reflected through its e-newspaper Vietnamplus receiving the OANA Award for Excellence in News Agency Quality for Chatbot app.

On the day, with its role as the host of the meeting, VNA has actively provided information in different types for OANA member agencies as well as other news outlets.

For the meeting’s success, the agency received special attention from Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam, Ministries of Information and Communication, and Foreign Affairs, and the People’s Committees of Hanoi and northern Quang Ninh province, she added.-VNA
