4.5 billion USD steel project seeks to raise capacity

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has asked the Prime Minister for permission to raise the annual designed capacity of the Guang Lian-Dung Quat steel project to 7 million tonnes of products from an initial 5 million.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade has asked the Prime Minister for permission to raise the annual designed capacity of the Guang Lian-Dung Quat steel project to 7 million tonnes of products from an initial 5 million.

Located on a site of 504 ha, the Guang Lian Steel has an investment of 4.5 billion USD with its first phase being implemented on an area of 335 ha.

Nguyen Xuan Thuy, the Chairman of Dung Quat’s Economic Zone Authority said on June 23 that after three years of being put on hold, the Taiwanese-invested Guang Lian Steel Vietnam Co., Ltd has started its test stake-planting worth 100 million USD with around 30,000 stakes.

The project’s investor said the planting of stakes would be completed by the end of 2010 to prepare for the construction of the plant in 2001, which is expected to complete in 2013 ./.
