The epicentre of the quake was located 382 kilometres northeast of Tokyo and at the depth of 10 kilometres under the seabed. It shook buildings for several minutes, halted bullet trains and sent people out into the street.
Meanwhile, cars and houses in Onahama city in Fukushima were swept away.
