The Saigon Investment Group (SGI) got together with the Laotian embassy in Vietnam and the Ho Chi Minh City-based Hung Vuong University to hold a ceremony to grant friendship scholarships to 98 Laotian students.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Vu Luan, Lao Education Minister Xomcot Mangnomet and Lao’s ambassador to Vietnam Sun Thone Xaya Chac attended the event.

The 98 Laotian students were enrolled in Hung Vuong University after finishing a pre-university course at the Foreign Language College of the Hanoi National University .

During their studies from 2009-2013, the students will undertake various majors including tourism, banking and finance, business administration, civil engineering and information technology.

The two-million-USD SGI scholarship programme is expected to encourage Vietnamese enterprises to fund Laos’ education and human resources development sectors.

The Saigon Investment Group has so far granted nearly 19 billion VND to various social programmes in Laos such as providing food to vulnerable areas along with building bridges and roads for rural transport./.
