– The action month forlabour safety and hygiene was launched in Ho Chi Minh City on May 6, focusingon measures to prevent and control dangerous and harmful factors at workplaceso as to mitigate occupational accidents and diseases.

Attended the launching ceremony were DeputyPrime Minister Vu Duc Dam along with representatives from the InternationalLabour Organisation (ILO), businesses and over 600 workers in HCM City.

Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social AffairsDao Ngoc Dung asked relevant ministries, departments, localities andenterprises to implement effectively the campaign and take good care of workersfor sustainable development of businesses and society.

He suggested increasing communications andtraining courses on labour safety and hygiene.

The Minister warned that in the new period ofdevelopment, Vietnam is facing a lot of challenges on labour safety and hygienedue to the increasing number of enterprises and workers, new occupations, andharmful factors caused by new technology and chemicals.

Given that, he proposed the State managementagencies step up inspections and apply strict punishment for companiesviolating regulations on labour safety and hygiene, while expanding effectivemodels in each sectors, industries and businesses as well as making good use ofoccupational accident and disease funds.

Chang Hee Lee, Director of the ILO CountryOffice for Vietnam recognised the achievements that the Vietnamese governmenthas gained in implementing the Law on labour safety and hygiene.

He said businesses play an important role inensuring safety for the working environment and health of workers.

At the launching ceremony, the Ministry of Labour,Invalids and Social Affairs and the Vietnam General Confederation of Labourpresented certificates of merit to units and individuals in recognition oftheir active contributions to the field.-VNA
