A three-year project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has helped to raise the capacity of central and local agencies in Hanoi and the northern provinces of Hoa Binh, Ha Nam , Ninh Binh and Nam Dinh in the management of water resources.

This assessment was made at a workshop to review the project on managing the quality of water in the Day River Basin , in Hanoi on June 22.

The project is to address the most serious of the environmental pollution, which badly affects local residents in the area.

It is part of a project to manage the Red River Basin which has received loans of 70 million USD from the ADB.

The project’s chief advisor Dave Hebbethwaite said that the project has trained employees to conduct surveys and analyse the quality of the water, manage water resources in general, raise the public’s awareness on water quality and draw up regulations and guidelines for licensing the discharge of waste water.

Also at the workshop, the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Nguyen Thai Lai, said that the project’s outcomes will be shared with other water projects, especially the licensing of waste water discharges, which will be applied nationwide./.
