Arjun Thapan, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) President’s special advisor on infrastructure and water issues, has warned that Asia is likely to face a serious water crisis that threatens to slow down the regional economic development.

Thapan delivered the warnings on the occasion of the International Week on Water that took place from June 28 to July 1 in Singapore .

Thapan reckoned that only 40 percent of the Asians’ water demand will be met by 2030 and there will be a serious shortage of water for production.

The wasteful use of water in numerous fast-growing cities in Asia is one of the main factors leading to the crisis, said the advisor, adding that the polluted water resources will make the shortage of clean water in the region worse.

According to Thapan, water is a limited natural resource so Asian governments should carry out projects to reuse water as what the Singaporean government did./.
