Minister of Health Nguyen Quoc Trieu said on July 29 that the A/H1N1 influenza remained under control in Vietnam with no fatalities as yet reported.

Minister Trieu made the remark at a gathering in Hanoi of the National Steering Board on Bird Flu Prevention in Humans given the fact that the number of A/H1N1 cases has steadily surged in the recent days.

Sixty more patients tested positive for the flu on July 29, with 54 cases in the South, three in the Central Highlands, two in the Central Vietnam and one in the North. The newly-confirmed cases brought Vietnam’s total to 763 by 5 pm on the same day. Over half of them or 389 patients, have been given clean bills of health, and the remainder have been isolated and are in stable condition.

Minister Trieu also called for stronger participation from the community to fight against A/H1N1 flu as the disease is showing initial signs of a larger outbreak.

He said that further efforts should be made in the coming time to actively implement strategies to monitor border gates and densely-populated locations to identify possible cases of A/H1N1 infection and promptly isolate patients, helping to prevent the spread of the epidemic to the community.

Minister Trieu urged that it is necessary to increase the storage of anti-flu medicines and masks as well as prepare for the establishment of field hospitals to treat large numbers of patients, which might be needed if the disease spreads more aggressively.

According to the Ministry of National Defence, army medical hospitals 103 and 354, have already responded to this need and are ready to set up field hospitals if the epidemic becomes widespread.

According the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)’s latest report, by July 29, the A/H1N1 influenza had hit 168,895 people in 145 countries and territories, resulting in 1,012 fatalities./.
