An additional 64 patients tested positive for the A (H1N1) flu on August 12, bringing the total of confirmed cases in Vietnam to 1,275 as of 5 pm on the same day.

According to the Ministry of Health, 916 patients have been released from hospital after treatment and two deaths have been reported so far.

Currently, the remaining 359 patients are under quarantine and being treated. All are in stable condition.

Head of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Environment under the Ministry of Health Nguyen Huy Nga said at the meeting of the National Board for Human Influenza Control on August 12 that as the number of cases of the flu has steadily climbed, current treatment facilities may not meet the future demand. This could lead to an increase in the number of deaths, especially among patients with chronic conditions such as those affecting the cardiovascular system, diabetes and respiratory illnesses.

Meanwhile, Director of the Vaccine and Bio-products Company No.1 Nguyen Thu Van said that Vietnam could produce a vaccine for the A/H1N1 flu as early as the end of 2010.

The Health Ministry also told the people to be vigilant in ensuring their own personal hygiene and wear a face mask to control the epidemic

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), as of August 12, 168 countries and territories all over the world have reported 215,090 cases of A/H1N1 flu, 1,735 of which were fatal./.
