Eighteen amateur athletes from Vietnam , Japan , France and Scotland on April 25 took part in a marathon swimming event to highlight the need to preserve the local environment at Hoi An City's Cham Island .

The event took place despite harsh weather and saw participants swim 18kms from Cham Island to Cua Dai Beach on the mainland.

Organised by the municipal People's Committee, the annual event has been running for six years to raise awareness on a range of issues. This year the need to preserve the environment was the main focus.

Municipal People's Committee vice chairman Truong Van Bay said the event was held to celebrate the one-year anniversary of UNESCO recognition of Cham Island as a world biosphere reserve.

Participants at the event, which had the slogan of "Let's keep the sea blue and the islands green", included teachers, young volunteers and even housewives./.
