Japan’s amended law on the management of immigration and emigrated workers that comes into effect on July 1 is expected to facilitate the flow of Vietnamese trainees to Japan, says the Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper.

Under the amended law, the legitimate interests and legal position of foreign trainees will be much better protected as it will change the attitude of Japanese businesses to foreign trainees.

Japanese businesses recruit foreign trainees to transfer Japanese skills, techniques and knowledge to developing countries, but not to use them as cheap labour, wrote the newspaper.

According to the newspaper, foreign trainees will be treated as Japanese workers and protected by Japan ’s labour laws and other relevant legislation.

After one year working on probation, they will be eligible for labour contracts and get full salaries and insurance policies. Their income will increase by 30 percent.

In addition, the amended laws prohibit foreign employment agencies from taking any money as a guarantee and Japanese businesses from fining foreign trainees, said the newspaper.

According to Vietnam ’s Department of Overseas Workers Management, the number of Vietnamese trainees to Japan is rising, reaching more than 2,200 in the first five months of this year./.
