Ammonia gas that leaked from a fish processing plant in Pagan Pasir, in the state of Selangor , Malaysia on August 11 claimed six lives, including two Bangladeshi workers.

The victims were rushed to hospital but pronounced dead upon arrival.

Five other workers who were exposed are in hospital in serious condition.

Selangor State Fire and Rescue Department Director Soiman Jahid said that a group of experts was sent to the scene on August 12 to contain the spread of the gas to within 100m. Residents nearby the plant were told to evacuate until it was deemed safe to return.

An initial investigation showed that the incident was due to the plant’s faulty refrigeration system./.
