A modern suspension bridge was officially inaugurated in Nam Cong village, Thanh Tan commune, Thanh Liem district of northern Ha Nam province on February 14 to replace the old Nam Cong ferry.

Construction on the 13-billion-VND bridge was started in July 2014. Its completion will facilitate cross-river travel of 1,500 locals, including 200 children, and help boost the locality’s economic development.

Nam Cong bridge is part of a project to build 186 suspension bridges in mountainous provinces in the northern, central and Central Highlands regions.

Figures from the transport ministry indicate that there are about 1,950 suspension bridges in Vietnam. About 810 operational bridges - roughly 40 percent - have shown signs of erosion and rust. Up to 94 percent of them are located on roads connecting villages and communes.-VNA
