The fifth biggest group of the Republic of Korea (RoK), Lotte, on Oct. 22 held a ground-breaking ceremony for the 400 million USD Hanoi City Complex-one of biggest projects in the city.

The 65-floor building will be 267m high and have a total floor area of 250,572 sq.m. It will have high-class apartments, a five-star hotel, offices and a shopping centre.

The deputy chairman of the National Assembly, Nguyen Duc Kien, said at the ceremony: “Lotte’s determination to invest in Vietnam is a reflection of the good relationship enjoyed by two nations.”

“We highly appreciate your investment here, which his come despite the great challenges presented by the global financial crunch.”

Kien said the project would contribute to the beautification of the capital for its 1,000th anniversary celebrations. He said it would also generate jobs, enhance economic development and raise Lotte’s profile in Vietnam.

Im Hong-Jea, RoK Ambassador to Vietnam , said the two countries started diplomatic relations in 1992 and in just 17 years, that relationship had developed greatly.

During RoK Lee Myung-bak’s visit to Vietnam this week, the two countries agreed to elevate “comprehensive partnership in the 21 st century” to a “strategic cooperative partnership.”

The deputy mayor of the capital, Phi Thai Binh, said: “This is one of the largest projects in Hanoi and it will partly contribute to the economic and trade development of the city.”

The chief executive officer of Coralis Vietnam Co.,Ltd, which will carry out the project, Lee Jong Kook said Lotte penetrated the Vietnamese market in 1996 and expanded its cooperation into areas of food, retail, cinema and construction. It had eight subsidiaries and it committed to continue accelerating its investment here, Lee said.

The building’s unique architectural design is inspired by Vietnam ’s traditional dress, the Ao dai.

Lotte was established in 1965 in the RoK. Its main activities are in retail, food and beverages, chemicals and construction and hotels and resorts.

It aims to become one of the top ten economic groups in Asia by 2018.

Lotte said it had businesses throughout the world but that Vietnam was one of its most important investment markets./.
