Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Do Huu Hao is joining energy ministers at the APEC Energy Ministerial Meeting which opened in Fukui prefecture, Japan on June 19.
At the two-day meeting, themed “Low Carbon Paths to Energy Security”, the energy ministers will discuss measures to cope with the energy scarcity and stabilize the global oil market amid the increasing demand for energy of emerging economies in the region.
The participants will also focus on policies to increase the efficiency of natural resources of energy along with enhancing the use of low-carbon energies.
Taking place in the context that the US , one of APEC’s key economies, has been struggling with the worst oil spill in its history caused by the British Petroleum’s platform explosion at the Gulf of Mexico in April, the meeting is likely to look at the safety of offshore exploration offshore and the oil spill disaster in the US .
A senior official of the Japan ’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said the outcome of the function may be incorporated into to the APEC Growth Strategy, a document expected to be completed when the APEC leaders gather in Yokohama city in November.
On the sidelines of the event, the Vietnamese deputy minister will meet with several energy officials and have a fact-finding tour of Monju nuclear power plant, one of two fast-breeder nuclear reactors in Japan .
According to a forecast released by the International Energy Agency , the global power demand would rise by 40 percent during the 2007-2030 period mainly due to increasing demand of Asian countries while the Asia-Pacific Energy Research Centre said that the region’s import energy use would go up by 45 percent./.
