More than 1,000 people in the central city of Da Nang donated about 1,000 units of blood during July 17 as part of a national campaign of blood donation.

The campaign, titled “Red Journey-Connecting Vietnamese bloodline”, is jointly organised by the National Steering Committee on Volunteer Blood Donation and the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT).

The campaign was launched in early July in the southern province of Ca Mau and plans to go through 36 provinces and cities nationwide to encourage people to join in the activity with a goal of collecting 12,000 blood units.

Da Nang city is the eighth destination of the campaign, which has so far collected 7,000 units of blood.

Each year, Vietnam needs more than 1.7 million blood units for treatment while the blood collected only meets half of the demand.

More than 800,000 people across the country have donated blood and some of them did it for hundreds of times. Da Nang is among localities boasting a high number of blood donors, accounting for 3 percent of its population./.
