The Youth Theatre group will present a dance and music version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet here as part of the International Day of Shakespeare Schools Festival in London.

International Day, this year on October 23, enables young people around the world to put on performances based on Shakespeare’s works.

In addition to being the day before United Nations Day, it will also be the culmination of the London festival, which ran from September 29.

“The global event aims to make Shakespeare accessible by providing scripts, resources and a platform for on-line global cultural exchange,” said Saira Dhanoo, international coordinator of Shakespeare Schools Festival, in London.

The Youth Theatre’s Hamlet is directed by veteran Lan Huong with funds from the Vietnam Stage Artists’ Association.

The performance includes ballet, contemporary dances and Vietnamese traditional “tuong” (classical opera).

“Hamlet is suitable for physical performances (without speaking),” said Huong, who is head of the “physical troupe” of the Youth Theatre.
“It is also a story to be worked on stage with different artistic genres. Ballet is the most successful.”

Last year, the Youth Theatre’s produced Macbeth. Festival organisers want young artists to take total creative ownership of their production and encourage them to perform in their local languages./.
